Gear
Gear Score
Gear Score is what determines the power of your weapons and armor: The higher the Gear Score, the stronger the gear. It directly effects Armor Rating , Type Damage, number of Perks, and Perk effects.
As you gain levels, you can utilize higher Gear Score equipment, increasing your overall Gear Score (which is displayed at the top-right of your equipment screen). Some game modes, like Expeditions, are gated by minimum Gear Score requirements so keep raising your overall Gear Score to take on mightier challenges!
Gear Score may be restricted by expansions, increasing the maximum Gear Score but only for participating players.
Gypsum Kiln

Gypsum Kilns are powerful end-game crafting stations that do not require a Tradeskill and can be found at Settlements and Outposts in higher level territories.
Upgrading Gear & Artifacts
Upgrade Artifacts and certain Named gear at the Gypsum Kiln: Use a combination of Dark Matter, Gypsum Orbs, a Matrix, and a Chromatic Seal.
- Dark Matter can be earned by defeating difficult enemies, through the PvP track, and more.
- Gypsum Orbs can be crafted at the Kiln with various Gypsum you earn in your adventures.
- Matrices can be crafted or bought at the Trading Post.
- Chromatic Seals can be purchased at your Faction Vendor.
Note: You need to have the Gear unequipped and unassigned to a Gear Set to upgrade it at the Kiln.
Expedition Replicas
Missed out on the exact piece of gear you wanted from an expedition? Use Expedition Materia to craft it at the Gypsum Kiln. Materia can be earned through completing expeditions and Season Pass Rewards.
Gypsum Orbs
Gypsum are resources collected from many different activities around Aeternum. Gypsum of the same type can be combined at a Gypsum Kiln into a Gypsum Orb, which has many uses in advanced crafting.
All Gypsum have a limited quantity than can be collected within an 18 hour period. The types of Gypsum are:

Heartrunes
Heartrunes grant special abilities that can be used separately from weapon abilities.
Equipping Heartrunes
The Heartrune equipment slot can be unlocked by completing the quest “Secrets of the Heartgem” Brimstone Sands.
After the slot is unlocked, Heartrunes can be equipped and swapped out similar to other equipment. Only one Heartrune can be equipped at a time.
Using Heartrunes
Once a Heartrune is equipped, the Heartrune meter with the same icon as your equipped Heartrune, will be present near your other abilities on the HUD.
Engaging in combat will fill the meter, and once it is full, you will be able to activate the equipped Heartrune ability by pressing [g]. The meter will need to be filled again after it’s used.
Finding & Upgrading Heartrunes
Heartrunes can be crafted in a Gypsum Kiln using materia and can drop from specific enemies in expeditions and raids.
When a Heartrune is first obtained, it will be a minor version of the Heartrune. Heartrunes can be upraded at the Gypsum Kiln.
Loot Biasing
Loot biasing increases the chances of getting loot that reflects your equipped gear, including attributes, armor weight, and weapon type. For example if you’re wearing heavy armor with a constitution perk, you’re more likely to receive more heavy armor with a constitution perk.
Loot biasing only takes into account your currently equipped gear and is stronger at higher levels. It’s intended to help you find gear that’s more effective for your preferred build.
There is always a chance for loot biasing to impact your rewards when loot is dropped, and the chance is increased or even guaranteed for some activities such as Mutators and Outpost Rush.
Perks
Items can have perks that modify their power. Perks can include:
- Gem slot
- Charm slot(offensive, defensive, and skill)
- Attack modifiers
- Power modifiers
- Tradeskill modifiers
- And more!
Set Bonuses
Some gear is part of a set. When you equip enough items from the same set, it will activate additional bonuses and modifiers.
Perks and set bonuses are listed in the tooltips of items.
Item Rarity
The rarity of an item shows how many perks an item has. For uncommon and above combat gear, it can have a mix of perk types.
- Common no perks
- Uncommon 1-2 perks
- Rare 3 perks
- Epic 4 perks
- Legendary 5 perks
Runeglass Gems
Runeglass Gems are augmented, cut gemstones that have an additional perk such as bonus Ranged damage or Health recovery. They can be slotted into Gem slots on gear. Runeglass Gems can be purchased on the trading post or crafted.
Runeglass Cases are combined with regular cut gemstones to create a Runeglass Gems. Craft Runeglass Cases with resources found in Brimstone Sands at the Runeglass Station in New Corsica, then combine a Runeglass Case with a cut gem at a stonecutting table.
Slotted Gem Perks & Charms

Any equipment, armor or weapon, with a Gem Slot perk can be affixed with a cut gem of either Flawed, Standard, Brilliant, or Pristine quality. Raw gemstones can be fused into higher tier gemstones and any uncut gems can be refined at an Outfitting Station.
To slot a gem, select the equipment you want to socket to and choose the “Attach Gem” option. You can replace the gem of a filled Gem Slot by affixing a new gem to the item; however, the old gem will be destroyed. Some equipment, such as many trinkets, can’t have their gem replaced.
Gems have two conditional perks: One applies when slotted into a weapon, the other when slotted into armor and trinkets. You can check a cut gem’s item description for details on its perk options. Note - Gems that grant the same bonus as an existing perk cannot be socketed into that item. For example, a Fire Staff cannot use a Ruby which grants fire damage.
Equipment that has a gear score above 725 has Charm Slots. There are different kinds of slots:
- Offense - charms that can go into this slot type will increase your offensive capabilities
- Defense - charms that can go into this slot type will increase your defense and survivability
- Skill - charms that can go into this slot type will modify active weapon Abilities
Armor gem perks and charms are always active while Weapon gem perks and charms are only active while unsheathed.
