Loading Screen Tips

The loading screens of New World: Aeternum offer gameplay advice, combat guidance, and glimpses into the history of Aeternum. This page collects those messages in one place for easy reference.

Creatures and Enemy Factions

The Lost

  • The Lost are proof that eternal existence is not the same as fairy-tale immortality. For some, it comes at a terrible price. People become Lost through endless cycles of death and rebirth that wither their souls until there’s nothing left.

  • Lost are weak to Strike, Ice, and Nature damage.

The Ancients

  • The origin of the Ancients and any knowledge of their civilization has been lost to dusty memory. All that remains are relics: crumbled monuments, ruins of cities, and legions of skeletal warriors.

  • Ancient Guardians are weak to Strike, Lightning, and Void damage.

The Angry Earth

  • The intermingling of Azoth and nature is most evident in the Angry Earth - a variety of plant-like creatures so named for their fierce guardianship of the wilderness of Aeternum.

  • Angry Earth are weak to Slash and Fire damage.

The Corrupted

  • The Corrupted serve as the immortal thralls of an ancient and unknowable force that warps all within its reach.

  • Corrupted are weak to Thrust, Arcane, and Nature damage.

Azoth and Fast Travel

Fast Travel

  • The most reliable sources for acquiring Azoth are completing Quests and closing Corruption Breaches.

  • You’ll rarely collect Azoth from defeating enemies, but the likelihood can be increased with certain item perks.

Camping

Camp Upgrades

  • You can unlock upgrades to your Camp at Levels 15, 25, 40, and 55.

Camping

  • Place a Camp near important places. You can then Respawn there in case of an unfortunate death.

  • Camps have a limited range in which you can Respawn. If a Camp Icon turns Red that means you’ve traveled too far away and won’t be able to Respawn there.

Combat

Weapon Mastery

  • Defeating an enemy with 2 different weapons will grant half of the Weapon Mastery points to both of those weapons.

  • Weapon Mastery Respecs are free until you reach Level 10 with that weapon. Find out what works best for you.

Damage Numbers

  • If your Damage Numbers are Blue, the enemy has resistance to your Damage Type. Try using another weapon to deal more damage!

Strong and Weak Damage Numbers

  • Strong attacks are Yellow and deal more damage. Weak attacks are Blue and deal less damage. Both are determined by your physical or elemental damage type.

Damage Types

  • There are 3 physical damage types: Slash, Thrust, and Strike. Find out which damage type is best against your enemies.

  • There are 6 elemental damage types: Arcane, Fire, Ice, Lightning, Nature, and Void. Use gems to add elemental damage to your weapons.

Gems in Weapons

  • Gems which convert damage to elemental damage cannot be placed into weapons that deal that damage by default. For example, a Ruby cannot be added to a Fire Staff.

Attributes

  • Attribute Respecs are free until you are Level 60. Take advantage of this time to figure out where you want your Points to go, and avoid costly Respecs in the future!

Duels

  • There’s no penalty for losing a Duel so don’t be afraid to take on all challengers!

  • Duels cannot be started inside a settlement.

PvP Flagging

  • You can turn your PvP flag on and off at Sanctuaries including Settlements, Outposts, Watchtowers, and at Spirit Shrines.

  • Before leaving a Territory, be sure to double-check if you’re Flagged for PVP!

Enemy Nameplates

  • If the enemy has a Skull over their health bar, don’t engage! This indicates a level and difficulty much higher than yours. Aeternum does not show mercy.

Weapon Coatings

  • Weapon Coatings are powerful, short-term buffs that you apply to a weapon to give yourself an advantage against a certain family of enemies, such as the Corrupted or the Ancients. Coatings work on ranged and magical weapons too!

Grit

  • If an attacking character glows White, only Crowd Control Status Effects (Slow, Root, and Stun) can interrupt them.

The Offhand Shield

  • Shield perks are only active if the shield is unsheathed.

The Rapier

  • The Rapier’s speedy cuts pair well with other Intelligence-based weapons, such as Staves and Gauntlets.

The Hatchet

  • For the best defense, combine Uninterruptible Berserk and Defy Death to force your way through enemies, and then recover with Berserking Refresh!

The Spear

  • The Spear’s Zoning Abilities and Dexterity-based scaling make it a great pairing for Ranged Weapons.

The Great Axe

  • The Great Axe is excellent for controlling smaller fights, with options for both damaging enemy groups or pulling heavy hitters away from teammates.

The War Hammer

  • The War Hammer deals Strike damage, which is effective against Ancients and Lost.

The Bow

  • While in Aim Mode with the bow, you can Charge Up your shot by holding the attack button.

The Musket

  • Musket shots will penetrate multiple enemies in the line of fire.

Stoke the Flames

  • The Fire Staff can be utilized for large Crowd Control or stacking Burn Statuses to a devastating effect.

The Life Staff

  • If there are no allies around, you can always use Orb of Protection at your feet to Buff yourself.

The Ice Gauntlet

  • The Ice Gauntlet is excellent at hindering enemy progression. Use its Slowing Effects to gain better positioning or give teammates an opening to do more damage.

The Void Gauntlet

  • The Void Gauntlet’s numerous Buffs and Debuffs make it very effective in group combat.

Retreating Enemies

  • Enemies in the world will retreat and become temporarily invulnerable if they are led too far from home or cannot reach you.

Companies

Companies

  • Join a Company and fight alongside your friends against the Corrupted and siege opposing Faction Territories.

  • Only Companies can declare war and siege Territories to take them over. As Governor of a Territory, your Company earns coin through upkeep, gets huge discounts on Fast Travel, and contributes to the success of your whole Faction.

  • Communicate and Group up easily with company members. See when members were last online and get access to a shared amount of Coin in the Company Treasury.

Crafting

Crafting

  • Food isn’t just for recovering after a fight! There are foods that increase your chances of getting rare crafting materials and foods that improve your crafting skill as well.

  • When crafting equipment, you can use higher-tier secondary materials to improve the item’s gear score. The higher the tier of the secondary resource, the more its gear score is improved!

  • When crafting Consumables, you can use higher-tier ingredients to increase your chances of getting additional items from that craft. The higher the tier of the ingredients, the better chances you have!

  • Looking for specific ingredients for a Recipe? Pin the Recipe to track it.

  • Skilled Arcanists can also craft powerful Potions that can save your life in a tough fight!

  • Each skill that crafts equipment can also craft a unique consumable with powerful effects.

  • Trophies are items crafted by Furnishers that can give powerful Buffs when placed in your House.

  • The top-end of the potential Gear Score range for a crafted item increases as your Trade Skill increases. This allows you to add more Azoth to improve your crafting.

  • Craft a Topaz Gypsum Attunement Potion at any Arcana Station or Tier 5 Camp. When attuned, you can earn Topaz Gypsum as a random drop from Level 55+ enemies.

Crafting Perks

  • If you want to see all existing Perks in the game, go to a Trading Post and choose “Select Perks” in the Browse tab.

Equipment

Distributed Weight

  • Items you have equipped do not count against your overall carry Weight. Use this to your advantage while hauling that last bit of Iron Ore back to the Settlement.

Equipment

  • Your Equipment Load determines how you will Dodge. A LIGHT Equipment Load will allow you to roll out of danger when Dodging.

Item Skins

  • To equip a skin, select a weapon or piece of armor in your Inventory and choose the “Change Skin” option.

Dyes

  • Dye can be applied to different parts of each item. Make sure you try out different combinations before committing to a color scheme.

Utility Determines Value

  • Items with higher rarity generally have special effects or gem sockets. Make sure to weigh all the benefits and not just gear score.

Gems

  • Want to tank? Socket a Carnelian Gem into a weapon to unlock Taunts on some abilities.

Fishing

Fishing

  • Fish bite more often in deeper water!

  • Different fish can be found in salt water versus fresh water. If you can collect it, it means it is fresh water.

  • Each Territory contains a unique Legendary Fish.

  • Most fish are native to particular Territories, except Salmon and Pike which can be found all over.

  • When fish are jumping from a hotspot, it is active and will allow you to catch rare fish more often. Hotspots without jumping fish need time to replenish.

  • Hotspots are the best place to catch rarer fish. They increase your odds considerably.

  • No bites? If you’re having trouble catching fish, then try finding some water. Fish don’t live on land.

  • Hotspots come in three categories: Broad, Rare, and Secret. Secret Hotspots offer the chance to catch the rarest fish, but they deplete the quickest.

  • As your Fishing Level rises, more Hotspots become available for discovery.

  • You must have a high enough Fishing Level to discover hotspots.

  • Fishing in active hotspots will get you bites almost immediately.

  • Different hotspots offer different fish to catch depending on the Territory and water type.

  • As your Fishing Level rises, you will be able to cast further.

  • Find Perronelle le Noir to start the Fishing Quests.

  • Win Fishing Armor by completing the Fishing Quests.

  • Every time you hook or catch a fish you get Fishing XP, which helps advance your Fishing Level.

  • It is easier to overcome a fighting fish with a longer cast.

  • A longer cast can be reeled in quicker, making fish easier to beat.

  • Larger or rarer fish are more likely to put up a fight.

  • Any Bait will decrease the time taken to get bites.

  • Better fishing poles have faster line tension recovery and increased chance of catching rarer fish.

  • Equip the Fishing Pole into the Inventory Tool Slot to use it.

  • Get Fish Filets and other bounty from Salvaging your fish.

  • Some Legendary Fish can be used to decorate your House.

  • Some Legendary Fish can be used to craft a Fishing Trophy.

Outpost Rush

  • You can queue for Outpost Rush at your Faction Representative or in the Modes menu.

Housing

Housing

  • There are 4 tiers of Houses you can purchase. Each improves your Fast Travel cooldown, Max Storage placement, and total Furniture placement.

  • Trophies you place in your House give you benefits all over the island, not just in the Territory the House is in.

  • You can Fast Travel to your House for free, once every few hours, by selecting your house icon on the Map. The higher tier the House, the lower the cooldown is.

  • You can place 1-4 Chests in each House, depending on the House tier. Each increases your Max Settlement Storage for the Territory that House is in. The rarer the Storage Chest, the more it increases.

  • Any Furniture you ‘Pick Up’ in your home goes into your Settlement Storage for that Territory, instead of your Inventory.

  • All Furniture in a House goes into your Settlement Storage for that Territory when you abandon it.

  • You can only own 1 House in a Territory at a time.

  • You can own up to 3 houses in the world if you meet the Level, Territory, and Coin requirements.

  • You can get a discount on your first house.

  • Not all houses are the same. Some are more spacious than others which increases their tier. These houses require a higher standing in that Territory and will cost more gold.

  • Owning a house has perks, but only if you pay your upkeep. If upkeep is due, you will no longer be able to enjoy Fast Travel or trophy buffs until they are paid.

  • You can only place 5 different types of Trophies in each House you own. 15 total if you own 3 Houses.

  • You cannot place more than 1 of the same type of Trophy in your House, but you can place 1 of the same type of Trophy in each of your 3 Houses. The Bonuses stack if you do!

  • You can view what Housing Trophy Buffs you have active in your Character Bio page.

  • Place your Furniture and Decorations in your House carefully to gain points in your Decoration Score. With skill and luck, your house might be chosen to be on display to the whole Settlement.

  • Want to up the curb appeal of your House? Place more items in it, then complete Missions and defeat monsters in the Territory your House is in. Rarer Furnishings cause your curb appeal to increase faster.
