Enemies
Brimstone Sands contains one of the most varied enemy populations in Aeternum because the territory preserves several eras of history at once. Corrupted Roman soldiers patrol fortifications, Ancient and Anubian guardians defend structures far older than the Legion, supernatural desert creatures roam the wastes, and enormous beasts thrive beyond the walls of ruined cities.
The result is less a single enemy-controlled territory than an archaeological battlefield in which the remains of different civilizations are still capable of fighting back.
Enemy Families
| Enemy Family | Presence in Brimstone Sands |
|---|---|
| Corrupted | Dominated by the remnants of the Roman 19th Legion, now transformed into an organized Corrupted military force. |
| Ancient Guardians | Protect Ancient and Egyptian-influenced ruins, including the Anubian guardians associated with the Ennead. |
| Beasts | Scorpions, desert predators, and the colossal Sandwurm make the open desert dangerous even away from ruins. |
| Angry Earth / Elemental Threats | Sand Demons, Nephilim, and other supernatural desert entities embody the hostile power of the landscape itself. |
The Corrupted 19th Legion
The 19th Roman Legion is Brimstone Sands’ most distinctive enemy faction. The Legion reached Aeternum in antiquity and became trapped on the island like every other civilization that arrived before and after it. Over time, its soldiers fell to Corruption.
Unlike mindless undead, the Legion retains the appearance of a military structure. Legionnaires, officers, ranged troops, and powerful named champions still occupy forts and camps throughout the desert. Their continued organization makes them feel like the decayed continuation of Rome rather than merely another cluster of Corrupted enemies.
Castrum Principium is one of their most dangerous strongholds. The elite Corrupted enemy Godling Jupiterion is found there, demonstrating how far individual members of the Legion can be transformed by the powers operating in Brimstone Sands.
Ancient and Anubian Guardians
Long before the Romans arrived, another civilization had already left its mark on the desert. Ancient Guardians continue to defend ruins and mechanisms whose original creators are gone or transformed beyond recognition.
Brimstone’s Egyptian civilization encountered the Ancients and interpreted them through its own religious worldview. This history is visible in the Anubian Guardians found within and around the Ennead. Their forms borrow the imagery of Egyptian divine protectors while their purpose remains familiar: guard sacred structures, mechanisms, and secrets from intruders.
These enemies are important to the region’s lore because they show that Brimstone’s monuments were not simply abandoned. Some of their defenses have continued operating across thousands of years.
Beasts and Desert Horrors
The open desert presents dangers independent of either Corruption or Ancient civilization. Giant scorpions and other predators inhabit the wastes, with named creatures such as the Terror of the Wastes representing the upper end of these natural threats.
Above them all stands the Sandwurm, one of the largest creatures encountered anywhere on Aeternum. The Sandwurm turns the desert itself into hostile territory: even places without soldiers or ruins can contain something capable of overwhelming an expedition of experienced adventurers.
Brimstone also contains Sand Demons, Nephilim, and other elemental or supernatural creatures tied to the desert’s stranger forces. These enemies blur the line between wildlife and the island’s magical ecology.
Notable Enemy Areas and Threats
- Castrum Principium — Elite stronghold of the Corrupted 19th Legion and home to Godling Jupiterion.
- The Ennead — Ancient complex defended by Anubian Guardians and other powerful Ancient forces.
- Akhet and surrounding ruins — Sites where Brimstone’s oldest civilizations and their surviving defenses overlap.
- The open desert — Home to giant scorpions, Sand Demons, and other roaming threats.
- The Sandwurm — A colossal desert predator and one of Brimstone Sands’ defining endgame enemies.
The Enemy Landscape
Brimstone Sands is dangerous because its enemies belong to different ages. The Roman Legion represents a human civilization corrupted after arriving on Aeternum. Ancient Guardians represent a civilization that preceded it. Desert beasts and supernatural entities show that the land itself was dangerous before either group attempted to master it.
Every journey through Brimstone Sands therefore crosses not only geography, but layers of Aeternum’s history that have never truly died.
