Brimstone Sands preserves some of the deepest known history on Aeternum. Its desert contains evidence of Ancient civilization, an early Egyptian society, later Roman occupation, and the repeated return of threats that earlier peoples believed they had defeated.

The Egyptians and the Ancients

Thousands of years before many later settlers reached the island, ancient Egyptians arrived in Brimstone Sands and encountered the beings now called the Ancients. To the newcomers, these inhabitants appeared godlike. Egyptian communities grew around the encounter, producing cities, monuments, temples, and traditions that blended the culture they brought from the Old World with the supernatural reality of Aeternum.

Imhotep is the most important surviving witness to this era. He has lived many lifetimes and died many deaths, accumulating knowledge while also confronting the danger of memory fading across an immortal existence.

Ancient Glyphs

Brimstone Sands contains one of the richest concentrations of Ancient glyphs and devices. The glyphs are not merely decoration; they form a symbolic language tied to mechanisms, sealed locations, and the technology of the Ancients. Their presence makes the region one of the most valuable places for reconstructing how the Ancient civilization communicated and controlled its creations.

The Roman 19th Legion

Centuries after the Egyptian era, soldiers of the Roman Empire’s 19th Legion arrived and attempted to conquer the region. Aeternum made conventional conquest meaningless. The Legion eventually fell to Corruption, leaving disciplined soldiers and Roman fortifications transformed into another permanent danger.

Legatus Crassus and the Roman campaign illustrate a central truth of the island: military discipline can survive death, but so can obsession and Corruption.

Akhet and the Buried Threats

The pyramid of Akhet stands at the center of the later conflict, while something ancient and dangerous continues to stir beneath the sands. Angry Earth activity, Ancient ruins, corrupted Romans, and forgotten powers all overlap in the territory.

Brimstone Sands is therefore a compressed history of Aeternum itself. Civilizations arrive, interpret the island through their own beliefs, attempt to control it, and eventually become part of the ruins studied by whoever arrives next.
